Betamax VoIP Services
The Betamax group of VoIP services is made up of +/- 20 apparently
different companies.
Many users do not realize that VoIPBuster, VoIPCheap.co.uk, Netappel,
SIP Discount, Voipstunt, Sparvoip, Internetcalls, Voipdiscount, Poivy,
Voipcheap.com, freecall.com, lowratevoip.com, justvoip.com, voipwise.com, nonoh.net, voipbusterpro.com, justvoip.com and others are all part of the same group. A recent
addition is also a Web activated VoIP service at www.webcalldirect.com and a sms service at www.smsdiscount.com.
This summary gives an overview of all the VoIP services, all possible
SIP settings, supported Codecs, Free VoIP-IN numbers, Betamax
infrastructure as well as validity of credits and free VoIP calls.
Here you will find a summary of all Betamax current free VoIP
destinations (updated 2-3 times per month). These "Free"
destinations change almost on a weekly basis and the Betamax group have
the habit of changing their rates almost on a weekly basis.

will never respond to any requests / emails from you they also do not

Overview Betamax and Finarea
Betamax GmbH & Co KG (www.betamax.com) is a company registered in Cologne, Germany.
In December 2005 it took over all of the VoIP services (see press release)previously run by Finarea SA, and has since added a few more VoIP services. With one exception, all of these services offer the same features; the only difference seems to be in the rates charged to various destinations at any one time, and in the color scheme used on the web pages and soft phones.
There are some indications that Betamax might just be a front for Finarea which still operates traditional PSTN call-by-call services in a number of European and Asian countries.

Betamax, specifically www.voipstunt.com, are sporadically using banners to advertise a dial-through operator in the US.
The service can be found at www.1010229.com and they offer very cheap international call rates, but only to residents of California. Betamax / Finarea may be expanding into the US through DAR Communications, the registered operator of 1010229.com.

The following service is geared specifically towards users of SIP devices and does NOT provide a softphone. It does require an MS Windows program though to register for the service. It will work with standard SIP softphones such as Firefly or X-Lite.
The following service requires an Internet Connection, a Web Browser, and a normal telephone; it is a web-activated callback service rather than a normal VoIP service (although it is probably
implemented internally by VoIP):
NEW - Early September 2006 Betamax lauched their first wholesale VoIP service. This service is targeted at the business user with a minimum call volume of 5000 minutes per month. No free service here, but still they offer excellent rates to both landline and mobile destinations.

All
providers support the following VoIP codecs:
G.711a,G.726,G729,G723 (possibly soon iLBC,GSM) - should you
encounter problems set to the default G711a

Note: It looks like the SIP settings for www.justvoip.com do not work.
It seems that initially Finarea ran its own Asterisk servers offering
SIP/IAX connectivity, they were located in different hosting centers
across Europe (Colt Germany, Rackspace UK, etc). Shortly before the
transfer to Betamax they started to consolidate all of their services
on servers operated by TVIconnect BV, who are PSTN termination
providers for callshops across Europe.

VoIP- IN
Numbers
(09-July-06 - Note: It appears that Betamax may have suspended their free VoIP-IN numbers without warning for new customers in the past week. All references to VoIP-IN numbers have been removed from their provider sites. Can anybody confirm this or is this only temporary? Please send us an email if you have any further info.)
28-July 2006 -According to a post on the VoIPBuster forum Voip-IN numbers will no longer be available from any Betamax provider. Previously issued numbers can still be used.
All of the Betamax VoIP
providers offer free VoIP-IN numbers, which will allow others
to phone you no matter where you are in the world. You will have to be
resident in one of the countries on the list. If not you can
still get a number if you provide an address in one of these countries
when you sign up. Most important you will have to have a positve credit
balance in your account before you are allocated a number.
The following countries
are available for VoIP-IN numbers:
Czech Republic, France,
Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK. (Status 27 June 2006).
This list tends to change ( the same as their rates), so check the VoIP
provider sites regularly if other countries become available. Austria
and Latvia were recently removed from the list.
In Germany the following

If
you provide an address from one of these cities then you will be
allocated a number from this city. If not you will receive a random or
a (non geographic) 032 number.
Dialing with the Country Code
All of the Betamax VoIP services expect the numbers to be dialed in the following format:
00+44+Area code+number. (44 for the UK for example)
In some countries it is now possible to dial a local number without the 00 and the country code. (This seems to be limited to some European countries, but go ahead and test if it also applicable to your home country). This option depends on the address you registered.
