Vonage ordered to pay Sprint Nextel $69.5 M

A federal jury on Tuesday ordered Vonage Holdings to pay Sprint Nextel $69.5 million in damages for violating six of its patents, prompting analysts to question whether the troubled Internet-phone company could survive.

Vonage, which lost another major patent case earlier this year, said it will appeal the decision that sent its shares plummeting 33 percent.

About five years ago, when few had heard of Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) as an alternative to the dominance of the big telephone companies, the promises of dramatically lower long distance charges and more features seemed almost too good to be true.

Initially, it was. Conversations either lagged or sounded like they were routed through a toilet bowl, while calls were mysteriously dropped. It all served to underline the telecoms' assertion that VoIP wasn't yet mature enough for business or consumers.

Siemens sees 400% jump in uptake of VoIP systems

The company suggests that increased user collaboration and productivity are the reasons, and states that it’s seeing uptake in all industry sectors and across companies of all sizes.

Truphone slashes VoIP call charges

Truphone, which routes mobile calls via the internet, has introduced its best-ever call rates - and they remain in effect over the Christmas period.

Until 31 December, Truphone users can enjoy free mobile calls to landlines in 40 countries and to cellphones in the USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Mobile rates in Europe have been cut 20% to just 15p a min or less, and there is no connection charge, while rates to mobiles elsewhere in the world have been cut by an average of 23%.

Digium Acquisition Shakes Up Open-Source VoIP

Digium is stirring up the open-source community it helped create by buying one of the vendors that has built an IP-PBX on its Asterisk VoIP platform.

Digium Thursday will unveil plans to acquire Switchvox, one of the many SMB-focused vendors that have cropped up in recent years with products built on top of Digium's open-source Asterisk VoIP software. Digium is the primary developer of Asterisk.

Touchmods hack brings VoIP to iPod Touch

The Touchmods team have released version 1.0 of SIP-VoIP for the iPod Touch. This hack will allow the Touch to make phone calls over its WiFi connection. Although named version 1.0, it is most certainly still a beta, and will take some special magic on your part to get things going.
