French ISP Free opens up subscribers' WiFi to each other, adds handsets

In what appears to be a potentially disruptive move, French ISP Free has just opened up its network of 300,000 subscribers' WiFi networks across France to its subscribers. What does that mean? If you're a Free subscriber living in Paris, and you and you come across a Free WiFi network while in Lyon for the day on business, you can log in and use up to 64kbps of bandwidth no problem.

Wi-Fi-only handsets are now becoming available that can be used over a WLAN via various VoIP providers. These are likely to become popular when the price comes down and they can work like a normal cordless phone. Cambridge Silicon Radio's UniVox is a prototype Wi-Fi VoIP phone that should cost less that $20 to make and have 20 hours talk time.

THE internet has revolutionised home phone calls, with services such as Skype offering free calls. Now the technology is moving to mobile phones.

Last week, two firms, Leeds-based Mobiboo and the US giant Belkin, launched mobiles that send and receive calls over the internet using a wireless connection (wi-fi), bypassing the traditional mobile networks and their high costs.

Mobile phones with wi-fi are shaping up to be the hottest segment of the handset market.

Dual-mode wi-fi/VoIP handsets are the fastest growing area of the mobile market, with a compound annual growth rate of 198 per cent between 2006 and 2010 predicted.

Sales of wi-fi phones topped $535m in 2006, a 327 per cent increase from 2005's figures, according to analyst house Infonetics Research.
