VoIP provider 8x8 signs agreement with company leaving market

Voice over Internet Protocol provider 8x8 Inc. said Wednesday it signed an agreement calling for exclusive recommendation of 8x8 as a replacement for the subscribers of a service provider that will soon exit the VoIP market.

Santa Clara-based 8x8 (NASDAQ:EGHT) said its platform "will be the only brand presented and promoted to the roughly 12,000 subscribers who will be left without VoIP phone service after the company winds down its VoIP operations over the next three months."

Caveat emptor. Word is that Microsoft (MSFT) may buy 5% of social network Facebook for as much as $500 million. And, rumor is that Google may outbid it.



Ebay just wrote off about $1.4 billion of the $2.6 billion that it paid for VoIP company Skype. At the time of the purchase, Skype had about 50 million registered users. By some measurements, that number is now over 220 million.

Last week, the FCC issued a ruling that takes VoIP service providers one step closer to becoming (dare we say) full-fledged phone companies by requiring that the VoIP providers offer local number portability. The decision was adopted unanimously.

As Mobile VoIP grows in the coming years, users will get on board via 3G networks provided by cellular handsets rather than over Wi-Fi.

That's the word from research firm Disruptive Analysis, which predicts 3G VoIP will draw more than 250 million users by 2021, as compared to less than 100 million voice users on Wi-Fi.

There will be technological and business hurdles to overcome, but the move to 3G VoIP ultimately is "inevitable," according to Disruptive Analysis's founder Dean Bubley.
