"But if Ribbit is successful," she said, "it very likely will be acquired by one of the major players -- companies Ribbit's brochure treats with some disdain."

Digium Acquisition Shakes Up Open-Source VoIP

Digium is stirring up the open-source community it helped create by buying one of the vendors that has built an IP-PBX on its Asterisk VoIP platform.

Digium Thursday will unveil plans to acquire Switchvox, one of the many SMB-focused vendors that have cropped up in recent years with products built on top of Digium's open-source Asterisk VoIP software. Digium is the primary developer of Asterisk.

Fonality makes Insightful purchase

Vendor aims to release a combined CRM and PBX product to sell through the local channel in Q1 next year

Phone systems vendor, Fonality, has acquired SugarCRM specialist, Insightful Solutions, for an undisclosed sum.

Former co-founder and CEO of Insightful, Marc Englaro, said it had done a handful of projects around Fonality's SugarCRM system and began discussions about how they could develop joint products.

Siemens sees 400% jump in uptake of VoIP systems

Truphone offers its VoIP software for Nokia's N80 handsets

LONDON: VoIP operator Truphone is offering its software for Nokia's N80 mobiles enabling users to make free VoIP calls.

London-based Truphone is launching a free download for these Wi-Fi-enabled devices in the next few days, following introduction of similar software for Nokia's E series business handsets. Using Truphone software, users can make free calls to other mobile handsets within Wi-Fi hotspots.

Apple and Cisco share iPhone name

Apple and Cisco Systems have resolved their dispute over the iPhone brand, with both companies agreeing that each can use the name for their products.

Last month Apple announced its forthcoming iPod-based mobile phone would be called iPhone, but Cisco had registered it in 2000.

Under the deal, they will also work together in the areas of security, consumer and business communications.

The financial terms of the agreement have not been released.
