Touchmods hack brings VoIP to iPod Touch

The Touchmods team have released version 1.0 of SIP-VoIP for the iPod Touch. This hack will allow the Touch to make phone calls over its WiFi connection. Although named version 1.0, it is most certainly still a beta, and will take some special magic on your part to get things going.

The Touchmodders are giving away the software and hope to make money on their iPod Touch microphone, without which you'll be having a very one-sided conversation.

TeleGeography is reporting that The Netherlands’ consumer fixed line telephony market grew by 2,000 connections in the second quarter of this year, bringing their total to 5.999 million. During the same time period, the total number of Dutch consumer VoIP subscriptions rose 7.1% to 2.2 million.

3 working on low-cost 'Skype' mobile

3 is thought to be working on a Skype mobile, which will give the VoIP service more presence on mobiles.

A spokesperson for 3 said the operator and a "leading internet communications company are working together to produce a exciting new product to make free internet calls completely mobile". The unnamed company is widely expected to be Skype.

3 is not releasing any further details on the product.

Voice calls over the internet have migrated onto Apple's new iPod and iPhone products through a new application created by VoIP technology developer Raketu.

Owners of the iPhone and iPod Touch can now use their device's web browser to make a connection over the web that allows them to talk to other people around the world.

Using the scheme means that international calls can be essentially free, although a monthly subscription fee to Raketu is required.

Experts are predicting that VoIP telephony solutions stand to benefit from advances in the UK's broadband network.

The Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA) said that as demand for high-quality online TV grows, broadband providers will increasingly warm to the idea of upgrading their connections.

Countries such as South Korea, France and Germany have already begun investing in ultra-fast 100 megabit broadband networks, capable of streaming up to a dozen high-definition TV channels.
