Residential voice telephony has become an unlikely hotbed for clever new products and new pricing models. For example, several VoIP providers are now promoting unlimited calling for one-time or low annual upfront payments, notably Ooma (www.ooma.com) and YMax’s MagicJack (www.magicjack.com).

Who’s to blame for Cablevision’s high phone number-transfer fee?

We were surprised recently to hear that consumers who switch to Cablevision’s Optimum Voice VoIP telephone service are charged a one-time $40 fee to keep their old telephone numbers. Posing as a prospective customer, one of our reporters recently asked a Cablevision customer representative for an explanation. The representative said that Cablevision merely is passing on charges imposed by customers’ former companies to transfer the numbers to Cablevision. In this case, the company was Verizon.

RingCentral Redials $12M for Hosted Voice

Hosted voice service firm RingCentral on Tuesday said it got $12 million in a second funding round led by DAG Ventures.

The new investment comes six months after the Redwood City, California-based firm announced an identical  $12 million first funding round which was led by Sequoia Capital and Khosla Ventures.

Voice Over Internet Protocol or Voip could make life easier for freelancers and out of office workers as they try to close contracts and win new business said a council member of the Internet Telephony Services Providers' Association.

Colin Duffy, who incidentally is the CEO of VoIP provider Voipfone, said that Small and Medium Businesses can compete on equal footing with bigger companies by being more flexible through VoIP services and by offering services such as having voicemals forwarded as sound files to an inbox.
