iiNet details 'Naked DSL' roll out

Broadband is about to get ``naked'' in a move that may further reduce dependence on the traditional fixed-line telephone.

iiNet announced it will be the first internet service provider in Australia to offer broadband ADSL2+ (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) without the need for a telephone service, also known as Naked DSL.

This means customers will not have to pay for a fixed line rental just to keep their ADSL connection going.

MySpace enhanced with Skype telephony

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) — MySpace and Skype announced Tuesday they are meshing social networking with Internet telephony, creating the largest voice-connected online community on Earth.

The partnership comes as MySpace rival Facebook gains ground and Internet telephony pioneer Skype struggles for ways to profit from the technology.

Skype will craft its voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) into MySpace instant messaging software worldwide by December, letting website members easily call each other's computers free of charge.

About five years ago, when few had heard of Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) as an alternative to the dominance of the big telephone companies, the promises of dramatically lower long distance charges and more features seemed almost too good to be true.

Initially, it was. Conversations either lagged or sounded like they were routed through a toilet bowl, while calls were mysteriously dropped. It all served to underline the telecoms' assertion that VoIP wasn't yet mature enough for business or consumers.

Australian VoIP providers must provide emergency access

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has urged VoIP service providers to enable users to access the triple zero emergency call number.

ACMA chairman Chris Chapman reported that currently is little consumer awareness that some VoIP services currently have limited or no connectivity to triple zero.

"It is important that consumers understand the choices on offer and the differences between different types of VoIP services and more traditional telephone services."
