Nimbuzz Offers All-In-One VoIP, IM, Text, And Chat

A Netherlands-based startup is offering a sort of Swiss Army knife VoIP-IM-chat-texting program that can operate on hundreds of mobile phone handsets, according to an announcement Tuesday.

Called Nimbuzz, the all-in-one application was announced in the U.K. and the beta offering is available for download. The company has received several million dollars in backing from venture capitalists, including $10 million from Mangrove Capital Partners, which was the original backer of Skype.

Analyst sees "huge" growth potential for VoIP

The market for business use of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) is potentially "huge", an industry analyst has reportedly said.

According to Comms Business, international research firm IDC said in its five-year forecast for the VoIP market in western Europe that the total value of VoIP applications will grow from its 2006 level of $194.8 million (£99.92 million) to around $2.25 billion by 2011.

The market's compound annual growth rate will also reach 63.1 per cent, it said.

Students at the University of Portsmouth and their families will have access to free phone calls via their computers, thanks to a new scheme being implemented in student halls of residence.

The University has installed new facilities which will provide students with cheap telephone calls to families and friends – and in some cases for free - using Voice over IP (VoIP) technology. Access to over 25 television channels is also part of the package in student halls.

Phone systems vendor, Fonality, has acquired SugarCRM specialist, Insightful Solutions, for an undisclosed sum.

Former co-founder and CEO of Insightful, Marc Englaro, said it had done a handful of projects around Fonality's SugarCRM system and began discussions about how they could develop joint products.

VoIP breaks onto iPhone and iPod

Voice calls over the internet have migrated onto Apple's new iPod and iPhone products through a new application created by VoIP technology developer Raketu.

Owners of the iPhone and iPod Touch can now use their device's web browser to make a connection over the web that allows them to talk to other people around the world.

Using the scheme means that international calls can be essentially free, although a monthly subscription fee to Raketu is required.
