AT&T Sues Vonage for Patent Infringement

AT&T filed a lawsuit against VoIP provider Vonage Holdings, seeking damages for alleged patent infringement.

AT&T Inc. on Friday filed a lawsuit against VOIP provider Vonage Holdings Corp., seeking damages for alleged patent infringement.

The lawsuit comes just days after Vonage settled a patent-infringement lawsuit with telecom provider Sprint Nextel Corp.

UAE to continue ban on VoIP services

United Arab Emirates (UAE) will continue its ban on software programme Skype and other services based on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a low-cost web-based communication technology, the Gulf News reported Monday. VoIP services will be allowed only through the two licensed operators in the country, Etisalat and Du, said Mohammad N. Al Ganem, director general of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

German traffic management company, ipoque, has released a study that shows 95 per cent of all Internet VoIP traffic is Skype traffic. The study was conducted in five regions during August and September 2007 and looked also at P2P traffic, video streaming, instant messaging (IM) and file hosting.

Callers go mobile

MORE than 100,000 residential landline telephones are being disconnected every year, as more people opt for mobile telecommunications.

A report by national consumer group Choice, however, says there could be disadvantages to hanging up on the home phone. "One part of the equation people often overlook is trying to make calls to someone without a landline," spokesman Christopher Zinn said. "Phoning their mobile is usually going to cost you more."

Nimbuzz Offers All-In-One VoIP, IM, Text, And Chat

A Netherlands-based startup is offering a sort of Swiss Army knife VoIP-IM-chat-texting program that can operate on hundreds of mobile phone handsets, according to an announcement Tuesday.

Called Nimbuzz, the all-in-one application was announced in the U.K. and the beta offering is available for download. The company has received several million dollars in backing from venture capitalists, including $10 million from Mangrove Capital Partners, which was the original backer of Skype.
